The coming together of art and technology is an important aspect of the work of the FLG. Because flame effects are integral to the artistic vision of the works that the FLG creates, technical knowledge is imperative in the creation process.

While each piece's sculptural elements allow them to be viewed/experienced on a purely visual level, the flame effects, and often an interactive element, complete the full vision and lend visceral depth and sensual dimension to the arch. In other words, fire is HOT!

I got my first peek into the Flaming Lotus Girls world last year. The place was a busy hive burners working on all kinds of crazy projects, but the flaming Lotus girls dominate the shop.

They were intense about what they did, and what they did reshape steel. And once they used hammers, or oxyacetylene torches or their bodies to create steel into their vision of the Seven Sisters, they played with fire. They created elaborate fuel systems from scratch, glowing more gleeful at the fireballs got bigger and scarier.

It is the goal of the Flaming Lotus Girls to empower women by teaching them skills and metal work and industrial fire arts. They will take their new skills and abilities and continued to create their own art as well is help out with the group's projects. The motto of the Flaming Lotus Girls hangs on the wall in the BoxShop. It simply says, WE CAN DO IT!

Neither words nor pictures do full justice to the Serpent Mother, a fire-breathing steel-and-electronics dragon that debuted this past August at Burning Man, an annual orgy of art, technology, and water deprivation held in the Nevada desert. Serpent Mother took six months to create. Her 55-meter-long body supports a hydraulically activated moving head. Forced air shoots burning propane from her fangs and from 31 points along her spine—a total of 1700 liters is used each evening. The jets can be shot individually, or they can be controlled by a computer.

Propane is a natural fit for fire artists such as the Flaming Lotus Girls. The group loves the fuel's portability and flexibility in art pieces such as this year's angel of the Apocalypse, which consisted of 16 stainless steel wings that emitted fire, a body made out of wood, and a head crafted from steel and glass that held wood for the final performance.

It might be easy to assume that they [FLG] just burn things, but that isn't even 1% of what most of them sees their medium. Their work is generally a combination of industrial arts and sculpture and other mediums that that also includes fire. The artists are schooled in a number of industrial arts -- plumbing, welding, electrical and metallurgy, to name a few.
