THE GROUP

The Flaming Lotus Girls are a loosely knit group of artists who came together in 2000.  For the past six years our group has grown and thrived, creating annual installations at Burning Man. We also have exhibited our work at functions around the West Coast and Amsterdam, including the Power Tool Drag Races (June 2004), Fire Arts Festival at the Crucible in Oakland, Festival of Lights in Sausalito (Dec. 2004) and Robodock in Amsterdam (Sept 2005).

Our sculptures are composed of steel, stainless steel, copper, glass, wood, and fire. Their flames blaze in sizes ranging from 2 inches to 150 feet. The style and scope of sculptures vary each year. The Seven Sisters (2004) was an installation composed of multiple separate components. The Hand of God (2003) was a figurative work with large scale fire effects. Most recently, the Angel of the Apocalypse (2005) was an interactive fire, steel, and driftwood sculpture.

Women and men are invited to collaborate with the FLG by helping design, build, operate, and play with machines. Projects encourage members in developing skills in metal sculpture, machine shop operations, soldering, welding, and the design of fire effects. We teach fabrication techniques and create opportunities for new and ‘old’ active members to use these techniques to further their own art.

The FLG work in an egalitarian fashion, accepting input from anyone who regularly attends meetings. All creative decisions are made collaboratively. Ladies (and gentlemen) can join the FLG with no prior skill.  We hold meetings every Wednesday night at the Box Shop in San Francisco, to discuss current and future projects and to introduce newcomers to metal shop etiquette, mechanical fabrication, and flame effects.
